Complex relational trauma

The result of time suffered from abuse, trauma, neglect (usually in childhood) creating negative symptoms or problematic thinking/ behaviors/feelings- which CAN be worked through.

Do you sometimes react strongly to something, then later find yourself wondering why? The past can be subconsciously triggered through feelings of rejection, shame, a smell, a look, a place- but since many times, we don’t realize where it’s coming from, we may find ourselves feeling silly or confused as to why we reacted that way.

Complex relational trauma usually is related to the caregiver and early attachments in life. It can look like physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, neglect, betrayal, abandonment, separation, bullying, rejection, torture, narcissistic personality disorder or substance use in a parent. It usually creates a negative self-concept in addition to many symptoms usually related to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for the adult survivor of childhood trauma.

Children go to adults and parents for support, love, and to get needs met. When a child is put in a traumatic situation, the brain is not adept yet to handle this stress. Coping strategies are then put into place and imprinted on the brain (our memory networks or schemas) to help the child survive in the environment. Since the child’s brain is activated into fight or flight mode, the child may dissociate, learn to be seen and not heard, become the caretaker of the siblings or parent and so on. The memories usually aren’t readily available in the brain, although sometimes they are. They can pop up somatically (where you feel it in your body) throughout life in the form of the five senses but might not be able to integrate into memory (causing memory losses/lapses).  This can create triggers later, that are subconscious.

Do you want to explore more about why you may be feeling physical pain and how you can decrease it? Are you struggling with body image, disordered eating, or drinking more than you want to? Are you wondering why your relationships don’t seem to work out? Or why you are handling things with anger at times of stress? Would you like to finally recognize and change those strong feelings of frustration, anxiety, and depression?

When stress builds up, it can affect functioning in different areas of life. I’d love to help you work towards your own life goals, together.
